Pelly became an incorporated village on May 4, 1911. It lies in the Rural Municipality of St. Philips No. 301, and its name comes from nearby Fort Pelly, the Swan River district headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company.
Pelly is the closest inhabited settlement to the historical sites of Fort Pelly and Fort Livingstone. Fort Livingstone was once a capital of the North-West Territories and a headquarters of the North-West Mounted Police.
